Devastating Floods Ravage Kebbi State Villages, Hundreds Displaced
Zogirma, Kebbi State – A torrential downpour Friday night unleashed a wave of destruction across Kebbi State, sweeping away over a hundred homes in Zogirma village in the Bunza Local Government Area and leaving dozens injured. The relentless rainfall, described by locals as one of the most severe in recent memory, also submerged four villages in the Arewa Local Government Area, displacing scores and causing millions of naira in property damage.
The sudden deluge caught many residents unprepared, turning a peaceful night into a scramble for survival. Haruna Danmalam, a resident of Bunza, recounted the terrifying ordeal to reporters on Saturday. “Many people sustained serious injuries. The rain came suddenly and didn’t stop for hours. Roofs were blown away, mud homes collapsed, and people were forced to flee in the middle of the night,” he said.
The aftermath has left numerous families stranded, desperately in need of shelter, food, and medical assistance.
Local Government Pledges Support
In response to the widespread devastation, Malam Muhammed Umar Mawo, Secretary of the Bunza Local Government Area, visited the affected areas to offer condolences and assess the damage. Speaking to victims, Mawo assured them of the local government’s commitment to their recovery. “We are not leaving you alone in this difficult time. The government is aware and will take necessary steps to support you,” he stated. He confirmed that a comprehensive report of the incident is being compiled for submission to the Kebbi State Government, urging swift intervention.
Arewa LGA Also Hard Hit
The disaster extended its reach to the Arewa Local Government Area, where flash floods wreaked havoc on four villages: Tungar Chindo, Tungar Kure, Feske Malabawa, and Feske Rafi. More than 60 houses were destroyed in these communities, and residents reported significant losses of livestock and valuables, estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of naira.
